Calendar weeks
How many weeks are in a year?
A year has 52 or 53 weeks, depending on the calendar. Under the ISO-8601 standard used across Europe and in international business, most years have 52 weeks, while a 53-week year appears roughly every five to six years.
The short answer: 52 weeks, sometimes 53
A normal year has 365 days and a leap year has 366. Divide either by seven and you get 52 full weeks with one or two days left over. Those spare days do not disappear: they pile up until an extra week is needed, and that year is numbered as a 53-week year. If you only need a rough figure, 52 weeks is a safe answer, but for planning, payroll or reporting you should check the exact count.
Weeks in 2026, 2027 and 2028
The table below counts ISO weeks, where every week runs from Monday to Sunday and week 1 is the week that contains the first Thursday of January. The number of weeks is read straight from the calendars on this site.
| Year | Weeks | Week 1 starts | Last week ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 53 | Monday, December 29, 2025 | Sunday, January 3, 2027 |
| 2027 | 52 | Monday, January 4, 2027 | Sunday, January 2, 2028 |
| 2028 | 52 | Monday, January 3, 2028 | Sunday, December 31, 2028 |
2026 is a 53-week year, so it is longer than usual: week 1 starts back in December 2025 and week 53 finishes in the first days of January 2027. Both 2027 and 2028 return to the usual 52 weeks.
Which years have 53 weeks?
An ISO year has 53 weeks when it starts on a Thursday, or when it is a leap year that starts on a Wednesday. In the coming decades that means 2026, 2032, 2037 and 2043 have 53 weeks, while all the years in between have 52. This is why any yearly plan that includes a "week 53" only works in certain years, and why spreadsheets that hard-code 52 weeks can quietly drift out of line.
Why the week count matters
The number of weeks changes how you budget and schedule. A 53-week year means an extra pay period for weekly wages, an additional sprint in an agile roadmap, and one more week of data when you compare year-over-year sales. Retailers and manufacturers often use a 52/53-week calendar for this reason, so each reporting year still lines up with whole weeks.
